STIX BONES Groove Like This Bone Entertainment Reading the impressive hip hop credentials of drummer Stix Bones (De La Soul, DJ Scratch of EPMD, Rahzel the Godfather of Noize, and Lyricist Lounge), it’s hard to imagine that we’d be talking about this particular artist in reference to Smooth Jazz. GROOVE LIKE THIS is Stix Bone’s first foray into Urban Smooth Jazz and an experience that is solely from a drummer’s perspective. Ironically the project doesn’t bang and slam, rather it grooves and glides smoothly from upbeat Smooth Jazz to lounge to Latin. After years of playing beats and knocking out rhythms with his hands on the hoods of cars, windows of buses and tables of the school lunchroom, the Brooklyn native went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance. This mix of influences gives Stix a mesmeric and distinctive sound in this genre.
GROOVE LIKE THIS is layered with textures and variety that allow for a revealing and reveling while listening to the album over and over. The sultry cool groove of the first radio ready single, “Double Jointed,” is augmented by a horn arrangement that sizzles with intensity and zest. The stunning “Dance With Me” is an invitation that shouldn’t be refused with a melody that is both dramatic and subtle; it personifies romance and desire. Hard day at work? Stress levels getting a bit high? There’s a simple solution… dim the lights, raise the volume, get comfortable and indulge in Stix Bones’ GROOVE LIKE THIS.
