Blockade Runner
Back in a cove so long ago
A boy was born with fire in his soles
He had a fleet of foot like none around
They say he hardly ever touched the ground
When on the run for shine or game
Straight up a mountain or down, he flew just the same
He grew up strong, along with the love of his life
A pretty young girl, he swore would be his wife
Only a boy of seventeen
With eyes so bright and full of dreams
He knew the life he led would soon be dead and the way he was would be no more
The day he left to join up for the war
Now he’s slipping through the lines
And sneaking through the woods
To take a chance and risk his life for the Southern good
And it’s a hard time to realize nothing stays the same
So he never looked back from that summer
When he became a blockade runner
He was a hero across the land
On his honor he delivered each command
Till a final dispatch came in he must relay
To a camp far south with no delay
As he read the letter, his heart stopped,
His blood ran cold and the pages dropped
It read, a yankee raid, but don’t intercept
In his very own cove where his darling slept
He lit out of there that very night, faster than a lightning strike
Knowing the price he’d pay for the choice he made
But he wasn’t going south oh no,
That blockade runner was headed home
Back at the cove, in the pale moonlight
The stillness surrounded wound around the very night
When out jumped a man with gun held high
Saying, “Here’s what ya get for deserting our side.”
A shot rang out among the hills
It swept through his soul like cold of icy chills
That single shot of lead so hot saved two lives that night
From out of the shadows stepped his darlin with a 45
Now they’re slipping through the lines and sneaking through woods
To take a chance and risk their lives for their lover’s good
And it’s a hard time to realize nothing stays the same
So they never looked back from that summer
When they became blockade runners
