The Hungry Wind
I’ll tell you a story, how it began
How my family started, all over again.
I’ll tell you a story, it’s a hard story to tell
How we got broken up, by a long hot spell

First we were told, cut everything down
We broke our backs, breaking new ground
Then we planted, harvested it in
Watched by, that hungry wind

My father worked it, his father too
They married and life was hard with its own rules
Then there was fired, it burnt us out
Our sheds and our stock and, the land here about
We bent our backs and started again
We were just watched by, the hungry wind

Instrumental

First there was fire, then came the flood
We paid with sweat, we paid with blood
When it was over, we started again,
Watched by, the hungry wind

Then the heat of 6 summers, just never stopped
We sold off our stock and didn’t plant crops
The ground broke open, I walked with a broken heart
Cos I can’t just start over, when there’s no place to start

And now the hungry wind, it’s here today
Taking the top soil, blowing it away
It colours the sky, colours my mind
Gets in my eyes, leaving me blind
And now my land is racing, across the sky
And I don’t have the tears, to moisten my eye
