Biography
Monika was born in Sweden of a German mother and Swedish father & at the age of 2 years the family emigrated to Tasmania.
By the age of 11, Monika had begun her musical career and taken up the guitar - she would later become accomplished at many other instruments too. But her first love was always singing and at age 15, she received an "Encouragement Award" from a local TV station in a competition where she sang her own composition. However, not satisfied, she re-entered the next year and won!
During the next four years, Monika honed her performing and musical skills, winning a number of major competitions in Tasmania and performing regularly in many venues.
At 21, she formed her own band, called it "Denim & Lace" and worked around Tasmania consistently for 2 1/2 years. During this time she appeared with many well known performers including Ricky May.
But the bright lights of mainland Australia were always calling and finally she went to Sydney to cut her first album.
"Every story must have an ending and I couldn't see mine ending in Tassie," said Monika. "I knew that my career was just beginning and that I had gained as much experience as I could in that part of the world. So it was time to move on and after we had made the album I had to decide whether to stay in Sydney, which I liked very much, or to move to Brisbane. Well Queensland won my heart and here we are today."
Monika's music is the creative force which drives her. She doesn't classify herself in a particular category, she has such a wide vocal range and can sing in a style to suit the location or occasion. Performing in a big musical is one of her more important professional goals and with her talent, drive and ambition, she will no doubt succeed.
