That Was Then, This Is Now

How It All Started
Country music really became a part of my life when I was seven years old and Dad heard me singing one day and next thing I knew Dad said, “I have a surprise for you Allen.” And I said, “What is it Dad?” And he goes, “You’re going to be playing with Hank, Jr. tonight at Panther Hall in Ft. Worth, TX.”

I didn’t know what to say ‘cause I was a young, little man there and was really scared to death. So when I climbed up on that stage, it was like I was right at home. It felt really good. Did a great show and Hank came up to me and he says, “Man! Not only do you look good, but you sing good.” So, that’s where it all started at.

On Songwriting
“See If I Care” was written with Brian G. White, my friend Tommy and me. We’d all had our hearts broken and we’d decided to write a killer ballad that everybody could relate to and that’s exactly what we did. When I have an idea it’s all about using the heart. Evidently, I’m hurt or I’m in a real good mood and there’s no better pencil than the heart. Everybody feels and it’s a true statement.

Well, it’s like hey, I had my heart broke. I know you did, I can see it in your eyes. I feel your pain, you know, and you never know when you meet somebody just how bad it is until they start talking to you and usually I’ll get a good song out of it. So that’s how I go about writing songs.

On Stage
I’ve been with a lot of stars - on stage, too. Did a show with Loretta Lynn and Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie. I look at Willie as one of the strongest songwriters myself because I can relate to everything he’s written. Johnny Paycheck, Ray Price, David Houston. There was so many of them. Dolly, Earl Thomas Connelly. Earl was my favorite. We did a lot together. But they’re all stars and they’re all very talented. Mel Tillis – yep – I had my plate full really.

Fondest memory out on the road
That would have to be when I actually got to walk by Willie Nelson. Got to hang out with him and shake his hand.

On Music
I love music period. It’s about the highest you can feel in life. I walk out on the stage and I get cold chills and I hear people screaming and hollering. You know, you can jump out of an airplane and can’t be that high.

River Run Records
You’ve done a lot for me. We’re going to keep clinking. We’re not gonna stop. I just know it’s gonna get bigger and better. Thanks to everybody.
