Biography
"When you listen to Renewal, Ebby Jewell's talent really shines through from his instrumental work to his artistic songwriting. From start to finish, this album is a real treasure. I highly recommend Renewal to any traditional bluegrass fan!" ~Darrell Webb
Ebby Jewell and The Bluegrass Kinsmen have been around 43 years picking Bluegrass. When Ebby’s Brother Shelby, the initial band leader who formed the band with Ebby in 1971, had to retire in 2012 due to health problems, Ebby assumed the role of band leader. Ebby had several years’ experience performing with The Bluegrass Kinsmen and other bands on banjo, mandolin, guitar and fiddle (including fill-in stints with The Country Gentlemen, IIIrd Tyme Out, and The James King Band) and several years’ experience teaching these instruments at Southwest Virginia Community College. This made Ebby the perfect fit for the task.
The highlight of this anniversary is the release of the band’s 5th album, entitled Renewal. Both Ebby and his wife Teresa are excellent song writers as demonstrated on this project where they wrote all the songs. In doing so, they were able to breathe some new life into the band (a "renewal" of sorts), stretching the boundaries of Bluegrass somewhat, but still keeping the main focus on traditional Bluegrass. The music is outstanding with Ebby Jewell on Banjo, guest artists Darrell Webb (a former band member) on mandolin and guitar and Greg Luck on fiddle. And Ebby was very fortunate to have no less than 4 excellent singers (Teresa Jewell, Tom Short, Ervin Compton, and Ryan Lester) in the band who could sing both lead and harmony, allowing them to be properly fitted to the songs. In addition, Ebby and Ricky Kennedy are excellent singers too and make a major contribution to the solid harmony on the recording. The result is a very refreshing album with much variety in both the singing and the type of songs.
“Teresa and I have finally reached the culmination of a project that has involved years of song writing and several months in and out of the studio to make this dream a finished production of which we are extremely proud. Special thanks to Tom Short and guest musicians Darrell Webb, Greg Luck, and Robin Smith for their invaluable assistance. Special thanks also to Jeff Mathis for working his magic behind the controls. And a BIG Thank You goes to the band members and our families for their unending support and encouragement.”
