Biography

Two-time GRAMMY Award winner, Robert Mirabal, lives with his family at the foot of sacred Taos Mountain in northern New Mexico. Robert maintains a traditional life, keeping the centuries-old customs of the Taos Pueblo people.

Described as a Native American "Renaissance man" – master flute player, musician, composer, painter, craftsman, poet, actor, screenwriter, horseman and farmer – Robert has traveled extensively and played his music all over the world.

His first flute came when he was 18, with money he borrowed from his grandmother, and shortly afterwards he had the opportunity to meet Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai.

In the years since, Robert has continued the evolution of his flute making and has also become a concert performer and recording artist. His nine albums of traditional music, rock and roll, and spoken word present a contemporary view of American Indian life that is unequaled. A leading proponent of world music, Robert has merged his indigenous American sound with those of Africa, Asia and Australia, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies categorization.

As a composer and a musician, Robert has won many honors, including two-time Native American Artist of the Year, three-time Songwriter of the Year, and a 2006 GRAMMY Award for Sacred Ground, Best Native American Album of the Year. His 2002 breakthrough PBS musical production, "Music From a Painted Cave", remains a benchmark Native American theatrical production.

On Sunday February 10th, 2008 the 50th annual GRAMMY Awards presented its Best Native American Album of the Year to Mirabal. The winning Mirabal album, “Johnny Whitehorse Totemic Flute Chants” on Silver Wave Records, captures a full-fledged Southwest tribal vibe in addition to blending world music influences. The record was co-produced by Mirabal and Larry Mitchell.

Mirabal's other 2007 release, "In the Blood," has won multiple awards including "Best International Album" at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.

Robert was also voted "Best Male Artist" of the Year at the 2007 Native American Music Awards where his "Pueblo Christmas" release was nominated for "Record of the Year." He was featured this October with the New York-based classical string quartet ETHEL at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s NEXT WAVE festival.

His first novel "Running Alone in Photographs," hailed as a contemporary "The Catcher in the Rye" meets "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," was released November 15, 2008.

Robert's Christmas album "Pueblo Christmas" was heard on radio stations around the world during December 2008. To review this amazing album of traditonal Christmas carols visit www.airplaydirect.com/robertmirabal
