KATY GUILLEN & THE GIRLS
REMEMBER WHAT YOU KNEW BEFORE
Taking cues from guitar behemoths like Jimi Hendrix, visionary songwriters like Patty Griffin, and roots-rock revivalists like Heartless Bastards, Kansas City’s KATY GUILLEN & THE GIRLS have been hailed as a salient force across the country.
One of the Midwest’s most captivating live music acts, Katy Guillen & The Girls has been hailed for their vivacious brand of roots rock. Over the past year, the trio toured the country in support of its second album HEAVY DAYS, opened for prestigious acts like Robin Trower and 10,000 Maniacs, and performed at high-profile events from the King Biscuit Blues Festival to the Big Blues Bender.
Inspired to create something fresh but familiar to listeners, the group explored the roots of blues, country and folk while developing ideas as a collective with mostly acoustic instrumentation. The new album revisits material from previous releases, tightening the focus on Guillen’s authentic songcraft and the versatility of her rhythm section. Tracking a portion of the album at Guillen’s home and stitching together new textures in the recording process, the band put fascinating turns on its established sound. Guillen is featured on flamenco, resonator, acoustic and electric guitars; Claire Adams on upright and electric bass; and Stephanie Williams on drums and percussion.
With the release of REMEMBER WHAT YOU KNEW BEFORE, Katy Guillen & the Girls bring the experiences they’ve gained and influences they’ve discovered as a group to the recording process.
