Born of the blooming, progressive Washington D.C. area Bluegrass scene of the 1960s, Emerson & Waldron formed in 1967. The group released three albums on Rebel Records before Bill Emerson returned to the Country Gentlemen and Cliff Waldron ultimately formed the New Shades of Grass.
Emerson & Waldron were well versed in classic Bluegrass yet both were interested in material outside of the standard Bluegrass repertoire. Although
Bluegrass Country features mostly traditional and standard tracks there is a cover of John Fogerty's "Proud Mary" and British rock group Manfred Mann's "Fox on the Run". Bill Emerson had heard the song and with Cliff they made it there own never knowing that it would become the Bluegrass standard that it is today.
Mike Auldridge is prominently featured on the album."Runnin' South" is one of a number of instrumentals he composed, "Spanish Grass" being, perhaps, the most well known. He later joined Cliff Waldron in The New Shades of Grass where he worked with Ben Eldridge. Auldridge and Eldridge left the group which ultimately lead them to The Seldom Scene.
