SOMETHING'S BETTER THAN NOTHING

“The best things in life are free & so is Something’s Better Than Nothing,” said the late Detroit songwriting HOF, Grammy winning icon Mr. Barrett Strong Jr. to his protégé Eliza Neals. Completing the song in late 2021, Eliza’s phone rang… “that’s it, you got it, get that out there,” said Strong. Originally written for Bonnie Raitt & released on “Stronghold II,” Strong’s last album co-produced & co-written by Eliza Neals. Eliza knew “Something’s Better Than Nothing,” would hit home in these troubled times.

“Something’s Better Than Nothing,” is the second single from Eliza’s forthcoming 11th studio album. The Detroit manufactures are; Mike Puwal (Alberta Adams, Kenny Wayne Shepherd) slide guitar [performed on the original], Jason Kott (Robert Randolph) on bass & Peter Keys (Lynyrd Skynyrd) on Wurlitzer 200a, it’s a brotherhood. A touch of Nashville adds Tim Grogan (Desert Rose Band) on drums & recorded in Pentavarit analog studios by owner Bobby Holland and Mike Puwal.

The final mix spun by Mike Puwal & Eliza Neals inside Univox1 in Milton, FL with Dave Feeny (White Stripes) mastering at the Tempermill Ferndale, MI. “Something’s Better Than Nothing” crafted from the motor city hit maker, Barrett Strong Jr, reminds the world what’s important in life.

CANDY STORE

#10 on the TOP 15 Songs on SIRIUS XM Bluesville for FEB 2023 and entered into regular rotation for all of 2023

In the footsteps of Ruth Brown, Koko Taylor and Etta James, Detroit’s blues-rock sensation Eliza Neals serves up her new single “Candy Store.” After catching the ‘Pawn Shop Blues,” a “Sugar Daddy” strolled into town but now there’s not enough honey to save him. This tongue-n-cheek gem takes ‘playing the dozens’ to new heights. Eliza’s early years of performing at clubs in Detroit and hanging with Barrett Strong, the songwriting legend is where her sweet style was honed. “Candy Store” will make you laugh until your sweet tooth falls out.

Eliza Neals on vocals and backing vocals, set up shop on grand piano laying down the sticky groove. A gang of her Detroit friends were ready to throw down secret ingredients. John Galvin (Molly Hatchet) on Hammond B3 plus piano. Skeeto Valdez (King Konga, Johnie Bassett) on vintage drums and Paul Randolph (Alice Cooper) on Bass. Mike Puwal (Kenny Wayne Shephard, ICP) on guitar with Kymberli Wright (Straight Ahead) on backing vocals. Recorded live inside the Tempermill studios in Ferndale, MI by Eric Maluchnik. Mixed with additional tracking by Mike Puwal at Univox1 Milton, FL and a final master by Dave Feeny (White Stripes) at the Tempermill.

LOVE DR. LOVE

“If you knock 3 times on the door round back and you hear the sound of a slide trombone you’ll soon forget all your worries back home…” A pilgrimage to New Orleans, the homeland of jazz, original blues music and voodoo is the inspiration for Eliza Neals “Love Dr. Love.” Searching for the answer to love and happiness, Eliza was drawn to the resting place of “The Voodoo Queen of New Orleans,” Marie Laveau. Visiting the crypt where she’s resting in St. Louis Cemetery, ‘the most haunted cemetery in America,’ Eliza felt an eerie connection and found new inspiration.

It’s a magical love shack tucked away, deep inside the hazy Bayous outside of New Orleans. Knock three times on the door, inside sits an upright piano, dancing girls and spiritual musical mayhem ensue. As soon as the party gets jumpin’, Dr. Love appears whipping up a love potion for the lucky chosen ones.

Eliza Neals enlisted Detroit’s world-class creators on this single. The contributors include Grammy™ winning legend Barrett Strong Jr. (I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Papa was a Rolling Stone) as songwriter and co-producer. Much of the music was cut in Strong’s former “Studio B” in Southfield, MI. Academy Award® winning musician Luis Resto (8 Mile Road, Eminem) plays clavichord and piano along with a clever horn arrangement. Songwriter, tracking engineer and guitarist Brian Lord added his rootsy-rock vibe.

The single moved south for its final touches. Mike Puwal (CannonBall Records, ICP) provided additional production as recording and mixing engineer, plus guitar at his ‘Univox1’ studio in Nashville, TN. Rounding out the musicians includes soul-stirring Kamaal Malak (Arrested Development) on bass. Tim Grogan (Desert Rose Band) plays an in-the-pocket groove on drums. Nick Haynes tops it off with some brilliant trumpet stabs. Eliza’s production, creative songwriting, and a gritty velvety voice equal a sensual walk on the wild side with this single.

YOU AIN'T MY DOG NO MORE

Just when you think everything is cool somethin’ happens and ...
“YOU AIN'T MY DOG NO MORE”
to the fool that did ya wrong play em this song! We all have our moments, some of them come with a hare-footed exit others with a long drawn out howl. No matter what, be it a lover, friend or foe, the chain that binds may be just a little to tight.
Un-leashed by Eliza Neals, while cleaning out her photo album of the “dogs” that kept “doggin” her around. Penned like the Blues Mama Jama’s, ‘Big Mama Thornton’ and ‘Koko Taylor’ who were wrasslin’ with a mutt, a tail-wagger and a mongrel or two in their times. This 21st century version goes out with a word of thanks, to all those dirty dogs… cause ¬“You Ain’t My Dog no More”

MISERY

Written fifty years ago, at the time of Detroit's automobile hay day and the beginning of a thing call Motown, was a curious song written by a 16 year old boy. Today that new sound appears to be everywhere other than in the city that created the craze. Enter Detroit rockin' blues singer Eliza Neals, who is striving to bring the world the real thing from the gentleman that created the sound with the first Motown hit "Money (That's What I Want)." Motown songwriting godfather Barrett Strong with Eliza Neals and Detroit co-producer Martin "Tino" Gross are co producers. "Misery" is the first single to be released from the upcoming album and it "gives you something to dance to through the summer of 2010" says Eliza Neals "it's a homegrown Detroit USA original product, unlike these soul imports."
