“Carryout or Delivery” is the third CD from 20 year old blues pianist Ben Levin. His second album “Before Me” also released on Vizztone, brought Ben’s authentic blues piano and soulful vocals to the world and paved the way for Ben’s nomination for a 2020 Blues Music Award for best album by an emerging artist. “Before Me” ended 2019 as the number 80 contemporary blues album on the Roots Music Report, measured by radio airplay. With his newest CD written and recorded during the 2020 pandemic, Ben explores the serious side effects of being cooped up with a steady diet of carryout and delivery food, but also manages to have a lot of fun and celebrate the things in life that we still have, namely love and music. On “Carryout” Ben expands his songwriting (he wrote 8 of the 12 tracks) to various shades of blues, soul, and funk while also showing that in addition to piano, he’s more than capable on the B3 and the Wurlitzer electric piano.
A little background on the album: we were planning to use a few hired guns on guitar (who we wish not to name) but because of the pandemic, Ben’s dad Aron stepped in for the guitar duties. The two are no strangers to performing together, as they play locally in Cincinnati and have toured Europe together as well. The rhythm section of Chris Douglas (upright bass) and Oscar Bernal (drums) lays down the solid groove, as they did on “Before Me.” The album was produced by Ben Levin and Matt Huenemann and recorded at Audio Grotto.
