BRUCE BALMER was born a guitar player to a musical family in small town Margaretville, NY. A diverse artist, Balmer defies genre limitations and can seamlessly move from jazz to rock to country
and more. He studied classically with the renowned Blanche Moyse in Vermont, has been compared to masters ranging from jazz great Django Reinhart to legendary fingerstyle bluesman Mississippi John Hurt, and cites Jimi Hendrix as a primary influence.
A persistent and committed songwriter, Bruce’s songwriting craft was honed with the spirited input of the late great Jack Hardy. For years, Balmer was a regular and devoted member of the Hardy “school of songwriting” (that is, animated cross talking songwriters’ circle accompanied by wine and pasta every Monday night in a tiny Greenwich Village apartment in New York City). Balmer often toured as Hardy’s sideman.
After years as a handyman, sideman and artist in Jersey City, NJ, Balmer moved to Texas in 2006 where he married singer/songwriter and jazz vocalist Lisa Markley (The Malvinas) in a midnight ceremony at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Their album, “Markley & Balmer.” was released with Soona Songs in 2008.
